Color Psychology

I have decided I will base my film around the emotional effects colors have on people. After studying Make Up, Fine Art, Media and Film I have learnt a vast amount about how colors can effect people, for example some brands such as,McDonald’s, who use a yellow M in their logo, promoting happiness. This is a use of color psychology in a marketing/branding form.

The reasons I have chosen this theme/concept is because I have a lot more creative freedom with make up, hair and styling rather than confining myself to a specific era or style. I decided to do some research on colors and emotions and I came across a fantastic website called The Art Therapy Blog, who goes into great detail about color psychology. This research will help me not only to showcase my chosen colors and emotions correctly but to also help me decide of colors I would like to use!

The psychology of color is based on the mental and emotional effects colors have on sighted people in all facets of life. There are some very subjective pieces to color psychology as well as some more accepted and proven elements. Keep in mind, that there will also be variations in interpretation, meaning, and perception between different cultures- The Art Therapy Blog

The Art Therapy blog state that color psychology is based upon the emotion/mental state a person experiences while exposed to a certain color. Warm colors, such as yellow tend to make a person feel happy and sometimes even irritated due to how bright the color is, while cooler colors tend to be a little more pure and relaxing such as blue or purple.

Colors and the effects it has on people can vary depending on the context/way the color is used, which can lead to conflicting or confused feelings. Colors have such a strong ability to lighten or darken someones mood without us even realizing for example Health Spa’s, an inviting, relaxing hide away with white painted rooms, blue swimming pools, purple towels, businesses use these colors to promote a clients feelings.

Color Psychology in Fashion/Make Up

The clothes/make up we wear everyday are a symbol of our style however, the colour we wear is our emotions sinking in. I believe if you wear yellow, you are probably feeling happy that day. Red, you could be angry, dominant, seductive or daring (Red Lipstick) Black, dark, depressed or again, seductive (Little Black Dress) There is a reason you wear the colors you do, we just don’t tend to think about it.
