Having watched so many films where the main characters/victims are ‘Blonde’ without fully understanding why I decided to do some research. We all know someone close to us who is naturally or unnaturally blonde haired, it seems this hair color carries some baggage, a stereotype of a blonde woman being stupid, as well as a lot of other things, my question is why? where did the term ‘Dumb Blonde’ or ‘Blonde Moment’ come from? why do people believe every blonde female in a population of billions is stupid? truth is no amount of research actually concluded that a woman’s intelligence had anything to do with her hair color and that it is simply a stereotype. Watching films has been a great way for me to learn about some characters that are very different but all have the same basic look, personality, job etc. Leading roles in films that are given to women with blonde hair or have been given blonde hair for a film role tend to be portrayed as stupid, idiotic, non academic individuals, examples of this character/stereotype include Amanda Seyfried in Mean Girls, Alicia Silverstone in Clueless and many others. Writers/directors seem to love this stereotype within film but some go against the normal casting/stereotype for example Legally Blonde, Reese Witherspoon may look like a typical, blonde stupid female with a Chihuahua in a Louis Vuitton handbag but she fights back as a character and becomes a Lawyer!
Another common find with blonde women is that they are apparently considered more attractive than women with brown, black or ginger hair. Women with Blonde hair and blue eyes are particularly classed as beautiful.
I also asked a few male friends of mine and 3/4 of them told me they prefer blondes (some for reasons I won’t write down here) but one did say due to models, actors, singers and general people they have seen, visually a woman with blonde hair was more better looking, Although they did agree that these ‘blonde’ women had to be bleach blonde, not dark or dirty blonde, which I can’t understand why that would matter. It seems women with blonde hair are considered more appealing and more of a sex symbol than other hair colors.
Blonde characters are very popular within a horror/thriller/drama genre due to this stereotype of them being stupid. We often watch horrors where the girl being killed is blonde (scream, for example).
